In Brief

What are the best road trips in the world right now?

The 12 best road trips, ranked: Pacific Coast Highway (California), Iceland's Ring Road, the Great Ocean Road (Australia), Scotland's North Coast 500, the Garden Route (South Africa), Italy's Amalfi Coast Drive, Germany's Romantic Road, Route 66 (USA), New Zealand's South Island Loop, Norway's Atlantic Road, Australia's Stuart Highway and Going-to-the-Sun Road (Glacier National Park). Journey Finder™ ranks each by scenery, drivability, value, and the single trip-defining stop on the route - not just postcard fame.

Why these 12, not the usual 50

A short list of road trips actually worth the airfare.

Most 'best road trips' lists are 50-deep and unranked. We pick 12, rank them, and tell you the one stop on each that justifies the entire drive. Every entry includes a real route map, exact distance, the season window, and a Journey Finder™ Route Finder link to plan transport in or out.

  • One signature stop per route

Every road trip has a moment that justifies it - Bixby Bridge at sunset, Vestrahorn at midnight, the Trolltunga photo. We name the exact stop, the exact time of day, and the exact pull-off so you don't miss it.

  • Best-month window on every route

Driving conditions, daylight and crowds change month-to-month. We list the 1 - 3 month window where each trip actually delivers.

  • Drive direction matters

Drive PCH south for ocean views, Iceland clockwise so the south coast is last, Romantic Road north-to-south so the cake shops thicken. We tell you which way each time.

  • Daily-budget reality check

Iceland is $300/day, the Garden Route is $80. Each entry includes a daily budget so you don't blow the trip plan on the wrong country.

The 12 Best Road Trips in the World

A magazine-style guide to the dozen road trips worth flying across the world for. Each entry is a real, drivable route with the distance, days needed, best months, drive vibe and the single trip-defining stop that makes it worth booking.

  1. America's most iconic road trip

    Pacific Coast Highway (US 1)

San Francisco to Los Angeles · California, USA

The 656-km PCH between San Francisco and LA is the road trip you've seen on every postcard - cliffs, fog-soaked redwoods, sea-otter coves, Big Sur switchbacks and Hearst Castle. Drive it south for unobstructed coast views (the ocean is on your right). Allow 5 - 7 days, not the 10-hour straight shot Google suggests.

Pull off at Bixby Bridge an hour before sunset, then dinner at Nepenthe in Big Sur - cliff-edge tables 240m above the Pacific, every table the same view.

  2. Best one-country road trip

    The Ring Road (Route 1)

    Reykjavik loop · Iceland

1,332 km circling all of Iceland - waterfalls every 40 km, glacier lagoons, black-sand beaches, hot rivers, puffin cliffs and the Eastfjords almost no one drives. Rent a 4WD if you want to detour into the highlands; the Ring itself is fully paved. Allow 8 - 10 days clockwise so the south coast (the busiest section) hits you on day 8 when you're already road-trip-fit.

Camping at Vestrahorn at 1am in summer - midnight sun lights the black sand pink and you'll have one of the most photographed mountains in Europe entirely to yourself.

  3. Cliffs, koalas, surf

    Great Ocean Road

Torquay to Allansford · Victoria, Australia

243 km of wave-battered limestone cliffs, eucalypt forest with wild koalas, surf towns and the Twelve Apostles. Drive west from Melbourne so you arrive at the Twelve Apostles for sunset. Take the inland Great Otway return so you don't repeat the same coast on the way home - it adds 90 minutes and shows you a whole different country.

Helicopter over the Twelve Apostles at $150 for 15 minutes - the only way to actually see why there are eight, not twelve, and how fast the next one is collapsing.

  4. Europe's wildest loop

    North Coast 500

    Inverness loop · Scottish Highlands

The NC500 is a 830-km circle from Inverness through Applecross, Ullapool, Durness and the Black Isle. Single-track roads, passing places, sheep on the tarmac, distilleries every 80 km. Drive clockwise - the dramatic west coast hits you with daylight to spare and the gentler east coast is your easy run home. Camper-vans rule here; book the Bealach na Bà pass in clear weather only.

Smoo Cave near Durness - park, walk down 60 wooden steps, and a Scottish guide rows you 20m into a sea cave with a 25m waterfall thundering through the ceiling. £6 in cash.

  5. Best-value long road trip

    Garden Route

Cape Town to Port Elizabeth · South Africa

750 km of forest, lagoons, ostrich farms, the world's highest bridge bungee, and beaches with no one on them. Drive east from Cape Town to chase warmer water. Daily budget runs half what Western Europe costs and you can self-drive without a 4WD. The Tsitsikamma section is the showstopper - hanging boardwalks over a tidal river mouth.

Bloukrans Bridge bungee - 216m, the world's highest bridge bungee jump for $90. Or watch from the viewing platform with a coffee and pretend you considered it.

  6. Most photogenic road in Europe

    Amalfi Coast Drive (SS163)

    Sorrento to Salerno · Italy

50 km of cliff-cut switchbacks past Positano, Amalfi and Ravello. Don't try to drive it in July or August - the road is bumper-to-bumper buses. Rent a Vespa or small Fiat in May or late September, base in Praiano (cheaper, central), and do the drive at sunrise before the day-trippers arrive. SITA buses are the locals' move if you don't want to drive.

Walking the Path of the Gods from Bomerano to Nocelle - 4 hours along a goat path 600m above Positano, then 1,700 stone steps down into town for negronis on the beach.

  7. Fairytale Bavaria

    Romantic Road

    Würzburg to Füssen · Germany

460 km through medieval walled towns (Rothenburg ob der Tauber, Dinkelsbühl), vineyard valleys and Bavarian villages, ending at Neuschwanstein - the castle Disney copied. The road is mostly two-lane country tarmac, signposted in brown, and dotted with cake shops every 30 minutes. Best in late May or early October when the trees turn and the bus tours have stopped.

Sleeping inside the medieval walls of Rothenburg ob der Tauber - the day-trippers leave at 6pm and the cobbled lanes are empty by 8. Stay at Burg-Hotel for a room over the city wall.

  8. The original American road trip

Route 66 (Chicago to Santa Monica)

    Illinois to California · USA

3,940 km across 8 states - Illinois cornfields, Missouri Ozarks, Texas Panhandle, New Mexico mesas, Arizona desert, California palms. Most of it is now drivable on the original 1926 alignment if you follow brown 'Historic Route 66' signs. Allow 14 days minimum, sleep in mom-and-pop motels, eat diner pie. Drive west so the sun is behind you in the morning.

Cadillac Ranch in Amarillo, Texas - 10 Cadillacs nose-down in a field, free to spray-paint. Bring a can. Then dinner at the Big Texan steak house: a 72oz steak free if you finish it in an hour.

  9. Most varied scenery per kilometre

    South Island Loop

    Christchurch loop · New Zealand

1,800 km circling the South Island - alpine passes, fjords, glaciers, vineyards and the Catlins coast. Christchurch to Mount Cook to Wanaka to Milford Sound to Te Anau, then back via Dunedin. Camper vans are the move - free DOC campsites with no light pollution. Book the Milford Road weather day - it's one road in, one road out, and rain shuts it down.

Driving the Crown Range Road from Wanaka to Queenstown - the highest sealed road in NZ, switchbacks above the Cardrona Valley, no guardrails. Stop at the Cardrona Hotel for a beer in a 161-year-old gold-rush pub.

  10. Most dramatic short drive in Europe

    Norwegian Atlantic Road

    Kristiansund to Molde · Norway

Only 8 km of actual Atlantic Road but it's stitched together with 7 bridges that thread between tiny islands and a sea so wild it crashes over the road in winter. Add the surrounding Romsdal region (Trollstigen pass, Geirangerfjord ferry) and you've got 4 days of road trip in 320 km. Storseisundet Bridge is the famous 'road to nowhere' photo - approach it from the east at sunset.

Driving Trollstigen pass with 11 hairpin switchbacks rising 800m above a glacier-cold valley - then taking the Eidsdal-Linge ferry across Storfjord with the engine off, gulls screaming overhead.

  11. Outback rite of passage

    Stuart Highway (The Red Centre)

    Adelaide to Darwin · Australia

3,030 km straight up the middle of Australia - red dirt, road trains, kangaroos at dusk, opal-mining ghost towns and Uluru. Refuel every roadhouse, carry 10L water per person, and do not drive between sunset and sunrise. Allow 10 days minimum or your perception of distance will never recover. Detour to Kings Canyon and the Devils Marbles - both worth the gravel drive.

Sleeping under a sky with zero light pollution at the Devils Marbles campground - the Milky Way is so bright it casts shadows, and dingoes howl all night.

  12. Best short alpine drive in America

    Going-to-the-Sun Road

Glacier National Park · Montana, USA

80 km across the spine of Glacier NP, climbing to 2,025m at Logan Pass. Open roughly mid-June to mid-October - the rest of the year it's snowbound. Mountain goats on the road, glacial lakes you can see the bottom of at 30m, hanging valleys carved by ice. The road is narrow (no RVs over 21ft) but every overlook is worth a stop. Get the timed-entry permit before you go.

Hiking the Highline Trail from Logan Pass - 18 km along a ledge cut into the Garden Wall with 600m drops on one side, ending at the Granite Park Chalet for hot tea before the bus down.

Methodology

How We Rank Road Trips

No paid placement, no influencer recycling. Four factors decide whether a road trip makes our top-12 list - and why a famous one might not.

Updated · May 2026

  • Scenery density

Per-kilometre wow factor matters more than total length. A 50-km cliff drive can outrank a 3,000-km cornfield. We weigh how often the road delivers a 'pull over right now' moment.

  • Drivability

Single-track Highland passes, NZ alpine switchbacks and Amalfi Coast cliff roads each test a different driver. We flag exactly what kind of vehicle, license and confidence level each route needs.

  • Season window

Going-to-the-Sun is closed 9 months a year. Stuart Highway becomes lethal heat May-September only works backwards. We rank routes higher if they have a wide, forgiving best-month window - and warn you if not.

  • One signature stop

If we can't name a single trip-defining moment - the stop, the time of day, the exact pull-off - the route doesn't make the list. The Trolltunga photo, Bixby at sunset, Vestrahorn at midnight: each entry has its own.
