In Brief

Where should I go on a trip if I haven't decided yet?

Start with three filters: how many days you actually have off, your daily budget and the vibe (city, beach, mountain, culture). Journey Finder™'s 12 go-trip picks are pre-filtered for ease of booking and how quickly you can leave. For 3 days under $150/day - pick Lisbon or Mexico City. For 7 days at $50 - $90/day - pick Bali or Vietnam. For 10 days bucket-list - pick Tokyo + Kyoto, Iceland or Cape Town. Every entry is visa-free or visa-on-arrival for most passports.

Why these 12, ranked

A short, opinionated answer to 'where do we go?'

Most trip-idea lists are 50 destinations long, unranked, and designed to keep you scrolling. Journey Finder™'s go-trip list is 12, ranked, and built around one question: which trip can you book this week and not regret? Every entry has a daily budget, a visa note, and one anchor stop that justifies the flight.

  • Bookable this week

We exclude any destination needing a 30+ day visa lead time, restricted accommodation seasons or unusual jab requirements. Every entry on the list is one Booking.com search away.

  • Daily budget on every entry

Bali at $50/day, Tokyo at $250/day, Hawaii at $400/day. We tell you upfront so you can match the trip to your wallet, not the other way around.

  • One anchor stop per trip

The single moment that justifies the flight - Mount Batur sunrise, Pujol's tasting menu, Sky Lagoon's 7-step ritual. Book the anchor first, plan the rest around it.

  • Visa & passport pre-checked

11 of 12 picks are visa-free or visa-on-arrival for US, EU, UK, AU and CA passports. We flag the one e-Visa entry (Vietnam) clearly so there's no surprise at check-in.

12 Ready-to-Go Trip Ideas

A magazine-style guide to the 12 trips worth booking this week. Ranked by ease of booking, value and how fast you can actually leave - each with its anchor stop, daily budget, best-month window and visa note.

  1. Go this weekend

    Lisbon Long Weekend

    Portugal · Western Europe

Cheap flights from anywhere in Europe (often under €50 return), no jet lag from the US East Coast, warm enough year-round, and you can do the whole city in 3 days. Eat pastéis de nata in Belém, ride the 28 tram to Alfama, and day-trip to Sintra. Pack one carry-on and go.

Sunset at Miradouro da Senhora do Monte - the highest viewpoint in Lisbon, free, with a kiosk selling €2 ginja in chocolate cups.

  2. Go for the value

    Bali in a Week

    Indonesia · Southeast Asia

$50 - $80/day buys a beachfront villa, scooter rental, three meals out and a daily massage. Visa-on-arrival for most passports. 7 days is enough to do Canggu (surf, cafes), Ubud (jungle, rice paddies) and Uluwatu (cliffs, sunset). Dry season runs May to September - book then.

Sunrise at Mount Batur - 3am pickup from Ubud, 2-hour scramble up an active volcano, breakfast cooked in geothermal steam at the rim. $35 with guide.

  3. Go for the bucket list

Tokyo + Kyoto in 7 Days

    Japan · East Asia

The classic first-Japan trip: 4 nights Tokyo, 3 nights Kyoto, shinkansen between. Get the JR Pass before you fly, book Ghibli Museum 30 days out, and pack walking shoes - you will average 20,000 steps a day. Cherry blossoms (late March to early April) and autumn leaves (mid-November) are the showpiece seasons.

Walking through Fushimi Inari at 6am - 10,000 vermillion gates climb a mountain behind Kyoto, totally empty before the day-trippers arrive at 9.

  4. Go for the food

    Mexico City Weekend

    Mexico · North America

World's best food city, US$100/night gets you a colonial boutique hotel, and you can fly direct from most US cities for under $300. 4 days does Roma/Condesa (cafes, mezcal), Centro Histórico (the world's largest cathedral), Xochimilco (the canal-boat party) and Teotihuacán pyramids. October to April is dry-season gold.

Pujol's tasting menu (book 2 months ahead) or Contramar at lunchtime - whole grilled fish, no reservations, expect to share a table with locals on their third margarita.

  5. Go for the contrast

    Marrakech + Atlas Mountains

    Morocco · North Africa

Marrakech for 2 nights (souks, Jemaa el-Fnaa, riad pools), then bolt for the High Atlas - Imlil, Ourika Valley or a Berber village stay. The medina is beautiful but exhausting; the mountains 90 minutes south are how you'll actually rest. Cheap from Europe (€80 return from London or Madrid), no visa for most.

Sleeping in a Berber stone house at Kasbah du Toubkal in Imlil - mint tea on a rooftop with the snowline above your head, no wifi by design.

  6. Go for the wildlife

    Costa Rica Pacific Coast

    Central America · Costa Rica

Fly into Liberia, drive 90 minutes to Nosara or Santa Teresa, surf every morning, eat casados at sodas, sloth-spot in Manuel Antonio. 7 - 10 days is the sweet spot. Dry season (December to April) is paradise; green season (May to November) is half-price with daily afternoon storms. Pack reef-safe sunscreen and one long-sleeve.

Night-hike at Manuel Antonio with a local guide - red-eyed tree frogs, sloths, kinkajous and a tarantula or two. $40 for 2 hours, far better than the day version.

  7. Go for the otherworldly

    Reykjavik + Golden Circle

    Iceland · North Atlantic

If you only have 4 days for Iceland, skip the Ring Road and do Reykjavik plus the Golden Circle (Þingvellir, Geysir, Gullfoss) plus the Sky Lagoon. Add a Northern Lights tour September to March or a midnight-sun hike June to August. Direct flights from 30+ US and EU cities, often under $400 with Play or Icelandair sale fares.

The Sky Lagoon's 7-step ritual - a geothermal infinity pool over the North Atlantic, then sauna, cold plunge, scrub, steam, mist, body lotion. 90 minutes, $90, worth every krónur.

    Vietnam North to South

    Vietnam · Southeast Asia

Hanoi - Ha Long Bay - Hoi An - Saigon over 14 days. Internal flights are $30 - $60. Daily budget runs $50 with mid-range hotels and street food. Best in March - April or October - November (between the wet seasons north and south). Hoi An's old town is car-free, lit by 5,000 silk lanterns at night.

Ha Long Bay overnight cruise on a small boat (max 16 passengers) - sea kayak through karst caves, swim off the deck at sunset, sleep with the windows open to the lapping water.

  9. Go for the Mediterranean without the price

    Croatian Island-Hop

    Adriatic · Croatia

Split as your hub, then ferry-hop Hvar, Vis, Korčula and Mljet over 7 - 10 days. Catamarans run morning and evening, costing €15 - €25 per leg. Hvar is the party island, Vis the secret one (Mamma Mia 2 was filmed there), Mljet the national-park-island. June and September beat July - August on price and crowds.

Stiniva Cove on Vis - a hidden beach inside a collapsed sea cave, only reachable by boat or a 20-minute scramble down. Empty by 6pm. Bring a dry bag.

  10. Go for everything in one trip

    Cape Town + Garden Route

    South Africa · Africa

Beaches, mountains, vineyards, safari, two oceans, and the world's most photogenic city - all in 10 days. 3 nights Cape Town (Table Mountain, Boulders penguin beach, Cape Point), 5 nights driving the Garden Route to Port Elizabeth, 2 nights on a private game reserve like Kariega. Daily budget runs half what Europe costs.

Sundowner gin and tonics on Lions Head with a 360° view of Table Mountain, Camps Bay and Robben Island - the locals do this every Friday and you'll walk back in the dark. Bring a head torch.

  11. Go for the architecture

    Andalusia Triangle

    Seville - Granada - Córdoba · Spain

Three Moorish-Spanish cities under 90 minutes apart by AVE high-speed train. The Alhambra alone is worth the flight - book it 3 months ahead. Add Seville's Real Alcázar (the Game of Thrones Dorne palace) and Córdoba's Mezquita. Avoid July - August: 40°C+ in the shade. April, May, October are perfect.

A flamenco show inside a 1500s Moorish cellar at Casa de la Memoria in Seville - 60 seats, no microphones, just guitar, claps and 90 minutes you'll remember for years. €22.

  12. Go for variety in one trip

    Big Island, Hawaii

    Hawaii · USA

The only Hawaiian island where you can drive from snow on Mauna Kea (4,200m) to a tropical rainforest to a black-sand beach to an active lava flow in the same day. 7 days is plenty - base in Kona for 4 nights then Hilo for 3. Volcanoes National Park has glowing lava in Halemaʻumaʻu crater after dark right now.

Manta-ray night snorkel in Kona - guides shine lights down, plankton come up, and 4m mantas glide under your stomach for an hour. Single most surreal hour of any trip.

How We Pick Go-Trip Ideas

No paid placement, no influencer recycling. Four signals decide whether a destination is on this list - and most popular destinations don't make the cut.

Updated · May 2026

  • Bookable in 7 days

We exclude anywhere with 30+ day visa lead times, hard-to-get permits (Bhutan, Galápagos, Inca Trail), or destinations where decent accommodation needs to be booked 3 months out. Trips on this list can be booked tonight.

  • Real value for the days

Lisbon at $90/day delivers what Paris at $200/day does. We weight value-per-day - what you'll actually do, eat, and see for what you'll spend.

  • Anchor stop named

If we can't name one specific moment that justifies the entire flight - the sunrise hike, the 90-minute tasting menu, the night-snorkel - the destination doesn't make the list.

  • Wide best-month window

Trips that only work 8 weeks a year (Iceland midnight sun, Hawaii whale season) drop down the list. We rank wider, more forgiving best-month windows higher.
